Born on May 17, 1954.
Zabel attended high school in Hillsboro, Oregon. He received his BA in Radio Journalism from Oregon State University at Eugene. After graduation, Zabel remained in Eugene and worked for the KVAL-TV television company and the KZEL-FM radio station.
In 2001, Zabel was elected Chairman and CEO of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, but left his post in 2003.
In 2008, won the US Writers Guild Award for Pandemic (2007).
