Her breakthrough came after the release of the film Babylon, in which she played the deaf girl Chieko. For this role, she was nominated for a Screen Actors Guild, Golden Globe, Oscar, and also won The Gotham Independent Film Awards for Best Breakthrough and the National Board of Review for Best Female Breakout.
