Yuri Khrzhanovsky was born in August 1905 in Kazan. He studied at an art school in Irkutsk, where he was a student of Ivan Kopylov. When he was seventeen years old, he moved to Petrograd. There he entered the Academy of Arts and studied in the preparatory class with Sergei Priselkov. Some time later, he also studied in the workshops of Pavel Filonov, Kazimir Malevich and Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin.

Yuri was an active member of the “Masters of Analytical Art” group - an artistic association of Filonov's followers and students. In 1927, a large exhibition was held in the House of Press, in which Yuri took part. It was for this exhibition that his canvas entitled "Siberian Partisans" was intended. Now this canvas is in the famous Russian Museum.

Yuri constantly divided all his free time and energy between a passion for theater and a passion for painting. He had good acting skills and an absolute ear for music. He performed in houses and cultural clubs, specializing mainly in the genre of sound simulation. From 1930 he decided to devote himself entirely to the stage. At first, Yuri Khrzhanovsky performed various roles on the stage of the Leningrad Theater of Miniatures. In 1939, at the First All-Russian competition of pop artists, Yuri became a laureate, after which he moved to live in Moscow. There he worked at the Theater of Miniatures and the Music Hall. During the war, he was an artist of the front-line brigades.
