Born in Bobbio, near Piacenza. Although Marco Bellocchio received a strict Catholic upbringing, he is currently an atheist. The director's father was a lawyer, and his mother was a school teacher. At first, M. Bellocchio studied philosophy in Milan, but later decided to go to film school. His first film, Fists in Your Pocket (1965), he shot with the financial help of family members, who also provided their house for filming.
