Soviet sculptor, film and theater director, playwright, screenwriter. People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR (1969) .
Born into a rural family of the Georgian peasant Pyotr Vasilyevich Kavaleridze and the Ukrainian villager Kilina Lukinichna Kukharenko. Studied at the Kiev Art School, at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1909-1910), in the studio of the sculptor Aronson in Paris. In 1911-1915 he worked as a sculptor and graphic designer for the Russian film company "Timman and Reinhard". Back in the 1930s, he acquired a reputation as a "dissident": a number of his films ("Koliivshchina", "Prometheus") were banned from showing, some of the monuments were destroyed, and a number of students and employees were repressed. He himself was saved from repression only by fame. Perhaps this was one of the reasons that during the Great Patriotic War he worked in the council of Kiev occupied by the Germans, where he served as the head of the culture department. After the restoration of Soviet power, Kavaleridze's theatrical work was tacitly banned in Kiev (his plays were staged in other cities). Kavaleridze's son-in-law was the Ukrainian sculptor and film director Rostislav Sinko.
He died at the age of 92. Buried at the Baikovo cemetery in Kiev. In 1987, the world community celebrated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kavaleridze according to the UNESCO calendar. In Kiev, there is a memorial house-museum of Kavaleridze (Andreevsky Uzviz, 21).
