Elena Anufrieva was born in 1889 in a simple working class family. Her father worked all his life as an employee, her mother was a housewife. After receiving a general education, the girl was enrolled in theater courses at the Moscow Philharmonic. Elena graduated from her studies in 1912 and after, for many years, performed on the stage of provincial theaters. She played in the performances of the Sevastopol folk, Berdyansk, Mariupol, Orekhovo-Zuevsky, Kerchinsky, Nizhne-Chersky theaters. Elena worked in the summer drama theater in Feodosia and in the drama theater of the Department of Public Education.
Elena Ivanovna's work in the film industry began in 1925. In 1931 and 1940 she was a staff actress at the Mosfilm studio. Before World War II, films with the participation of Elena Anufrieva were released, such as Ranks and People, Grunya Kornyakova, Generation of Winners, New Moscow, Wonderland, Virgin Soil Upturned, In Search of Joy.
