In 1987, guitarist Eric Schenkman (b. December 12, 1963) performed with vocalist John Popper in a group called the Trucking Company. After some time, John moved to Blues Traveler, and offered to replace himself with his school friend Chris Barron (b. 5 February 1968). Later, Eric and Chris met a student of the jazz department of the New York music school Aaron Comess (b. April 24, 1968; drums). It was then that the guys decided to organize their own project, called "Spin doctors". At first it was tight with the bassist, and a lot of people tried for this position, until Aaron brought his friend from the band "Spade" Mark White (b. July 7, 1962) into the gang.
Each of the guys had their own musical tastes (Mark listened to Prince, Aaraon was joking about Coltrane, Eric was a fan of Al Green, and Chris was a fan of "Who"), and as a result, Spin doctors got a cocktail of different styles: jazz, funk, blues and rock.
