Yuri Yuriev was born in January 1872 in the Russian Empire. He spent his childhood in the house of an uncle named Sergei Yuryev, who was a theater and literary figure, theater critic and translator. Since 1889, Yuri studied at the Moscow Philharmonic School with Alexander Yuzhin, after which he transferred to the Moscow Theater School to Alexander Lensky for drama courses. Thanks to this, he received small roles in productions of the Maly Theater.

Yuri Yuriev got his first roles in 1892, when the performances “Count de Risor” and “Northern Heroes” were staged. Between 1893 and 1917, he performed at the Alexandria Theater and was among the leading actors.

An irresistible desire for the revival of an ancient tragedy, in which the production and the audience are inextricably linked, pushed Yuri to create the "Theater of Tragedy" at his own expense in Petrograd. The first performance staged in this theater was Oedipus the King. The main role was played by Yuryev himself. The subsequent performance "Macbeth" was the last production of the "Theater of Tragedy". In the same year, Yuryev tried to create the Bolshoi Drama Theater and became the leading actor in it.

The opening of the Bolshoi Drama Theater took place in February 1919. In the debut play Don Carlos, Yuri played the role of the Marquis Pozu. On the stage of this theater in Shakespeare's tragedies, he more than once played King Lear, Othello and Macbeth, but in 1921 a conflict took place between Yuri and the head of the theater, as a result of which he left the BDT.

The following years he served as a director at the Alexandria Theater, then was an actor at the Moscow Maly and at the Theater. Meyerhold. The last ten years of his acting career, he worked at the Theater. Pushkin, and his last role was Othello in January 1945.
