In the Lithuanian city of Ponevezys, on April 28, 1899, Veniamin Zuskin was born into the family of an ordinary tailor. The future actor received his primary education in a Jewish religious elementary school, and from 1911 he continued his studies in a real school. In the spring of 1915, the mass eviction of Jews from the Baltic countries began. The Zuskin family ended up in Penza, where Benjamin continued to study at the school, and in his free time he gladly took part in performances of an amateur theater studio.

Since 1920, the young man became interested in mining, enrolling in the Sverdlovsk Mining Institute, but the following year he transferred to Moscow to a similar educational institution. Upon arrival in the capital, Benjamin became a member of the studio at the Jewish Chamber Theater, and three months later became a full member of the troupe.
