Hu Mei's father was a conductor, mother was a singer, and their daughter learned to play the piano from childhood. When the Beijing Film Academy was reopened at the end of the Cultural Revolution, Hu Mei enrolled in filmmaking courses on her father's advice.
After graduating from the Academy in 1982, she went to work at the Ba i film studio. In 1984, she directed her first film, Ladies' Tower (?? ?).
In 1997, Hu Mei directed the historical television series Yongzheng Reign, which became a hit in the PRC.
