Born on May 29, 1957 in Tehran, Iran - famous Iranian film director and screenwriter. Currently the President of the Asian Film Academy.
Makhmalbaf's films were widely recognized at international film festivals in the 1990s and 2000s. In 2001, the American magazine Time included the film "Kandahar" in the top 100 films of all time. In the same 2001, Makhmalbaf was awarded the "Federico Fellini Gold Medal" from UNESCO. In 2006, Makhmalbaf was a jury member at the Venice Film Festival. In 2006 he received the Sergey Parajanov Prize for his outstanding artistic contribution to world cinema.
