At the age of 8, he began to study martial arts and began training in karate under Ryusho Sakagami in the direction of Shito-ryu Itosu Kai when he was 12. Damura received a black belt in 1956 and won the East Japanese Karate Championship in 1957. In early 1958, Damura began training in kobudo (the Okinawan art of using weapons); the preparation was supervised by Shinken Taira sensei. Damura is renowned for his abilities as a weapons instructor and for teaching the martial arts to famous actors such as Bruce Lee. In 1965, Damura and Dan Ivan came to the United States to teach and promote the Shito-ryu karate style.
Damura has received numerous awards and has been recognized by the American and international martial arts communities. In 2005, he celebrated his 40th year in the United States as a martial arts master and teacher. In 2003, Damura became president and chief instructor of the Shito-ryu Gembu Kai branch of Itosu Kai, and as of the end of 2009 continues to hold these positions.

Damura lives in Southern California but spends most of his time touring (in the US and abroad) as a teacher and official guest. He teaches karate students in many US states and over 24 countries. Despite having lived in the United States for over 40 years, Damura remains a Japanese citizen, but speaks very good English. Recovering from minor heart problems, he traveled the world for a long time, attending a variety of dojos where the Gembu Kai style is taught, conducting karate and kobudo workshops and acting in films.
