Eijiro Tohno is a Japanese theater, film and television actor, voice actor, theater director and essayist. Despite the fact that he most often acted in supporting roles on the movie screen, he is considered one of the most famous Japanese actors of the 20th century for his vividly embodied images in cinema and for his highly regarded theatrical works. For merits in the field of theater and cinema art in 1975, the actor was awarded the Medal of Honor with a purple ribbon. In 1982, Eijiro Tohno was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun, IV degree.
Eijiro Tohno married twice. The first of his wives was named Hideo, the second was Reiko (both took her husband's surname). The eldest of his sons, Eishin Tohno (1942–2000), followed in his father's footsteps as an actor, but never enjoyed the success that accompanied his father. He died at the age of 58, 6 years after the death of his father, from a cerebral hemorrhage. The son of Eishin Tohno from his marriage to actress Mariko Hattori - Katsu Tohno (respectively, the grandson of Eijiro Tohno) - became a composer, composing music, including for cinema.
