Klaus Barbie was born on October 25, 1913 in Bad Godesberg, in western Germany. After school, Klaus enters the service in the SS (guard detachment) where he rose to the position corresponding to the rank of captain. In 1937 he joined the party of Adolf Hitler. For 2 years he served in The Hague in the department for issues related to Jews. Many famous people have been tortured under the leadership of Klaus Barbie. Such as Jean Amery (writer from Austria), Jean Moulin (member of the Resistance Movement) and others. Klaus Barbie was famous for unlimited cruelty and bloody massacre of people. He is known by such nicknames as "the butcher of Lyon" and "the executioner of Lyon".
At the end of World War II, he was sentenced to death. But when the time came for the execution, he became an American secret service agent and left for Bolivia under a different name. In 1952 and 1954, he was again convicted and sentenced to death for committing atrocious crimes against members of the Resistance Movement, as well as for the murders of prisoners in Montluk prison.
In the 1980s, in Bolivia, he served as security advisor to President Luis Mesa. In 1983, the Bolivian government extradited Klaus to France, where he was convicted of his atrocities and sentenced to eternal imprisonment by a court decision, where he died from cancer in 1991.

Director Marcel Ophuls found the life story of Klaus Barbie very interesting to society and made a documentary biopic with Klaus Barbie called Hotel Terminus: The Time and Life of Klaus Barbie. The film was nominated for an Oscar-1989 and, as a result, won a well-deserved victory as "Best Documentary".
