Born in Sannefjord (Norway) December 18, 1956.
He studied literature and film theory at Stockholm University, studied at the Stockholm Film School. In addition to his future films, he has written and directed several short documentaries.
His first film, Eggs, premiered at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival, where it was screened in the Directors' Two Weeks section. In the same year, the film was selected for the competition program at the Moscow International Film Festival, where it was awarded the Best Debut award; he also won the 1995 FIPRESCI Award at the Toronto Film Festival.
Filmed in 2003, Kitchen Stories has been screened at many international festivals, and has also been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film from Norway.
In April 2004, Bent Hammer began filming Factotum based on the novel of the same name by the American writer Charles Bukowski. The screenplay was written by Hamer and Jim Stark (Mystery Train, Cold Fever), who co-produced the film with Christine Walker (American Splendor). The film premiered at the Cosmorama Film Festival in Trondheim, Norway on April 12, 2005.
Hamer is the owner and founder of Bulbul Films, founded in Oslo in 1994.
