On his father's side, he came from a family of German nobles who entered the Russian service in the 19th century, on his mother's side, from the Armenian cultural family of Piradyans (Piradovs). Father, Lev Vladimirovich, was a diplomat, then a translator, mother, Evgenia Vasilievna - an actress, later an employee of the trade union of cultural workers.
