The history of Jamiroquai began in 1992 in England, when Jason Louis Cheetham was not selected for The brand new heavies. It was then that the idea arose to assemble your own team to perform songs similar to the style of the idol Stevie Wonder. Jay recruited Toby Smith (keyboardist), Derrick McKenzie (drummer), Stuart Zender (bassist), and later took on three backing vocalists. With this lineup, Jamiroquai released their debut album Emergency on planet Earth in 1993, which became the fastest-selling album in the UK. The music turned out to be a kind of mix of funk, jazz, soul motives and hip-hop, which later became known as acid jazz.
The second disc, The return of the space cowboy, appeared in 1994 and became very popular in the Kingdom. Popularity on another continent came with the release of the compilation album in 1996 Traveling without moving. Here reggae and disco were added to the playing style, and the song Virtual insanity received several Grammy awards. The record itself was played on all charts of the Atlantic coast. At the same time, a film with Jamiroquai Godzilla was released, in which the team played the song Deeper Underground.
Another compilation A funk Odyssey had a stunning effect, including such immortal compositions as Twenty zero one, Corner of the Earth, Black crow. The disc turned out to be very versatile - from harmonious compositions to radical hip-hop ones with serene ballads and energetic disco.
In 2006 the band toured in support of the next compilation Dynamite and had great support around the world. This year was also marked by the release of the album High times: Singles 1992-2006, which includes hits from previous years.
For some time the band disappeared from the fans' sight, but in 2010 it was possible to watch Jamiroquai on the next tour with both old favorite compositions and new songs from the Rock dust light star album.
During its existence, a large number of members have changed in the collective, at the moment, in addition to the permanent leader Jay Kay, they play Shola Ackingball (percussion), Paul Turner (bass), Derrick McKenzie (drums), Matt Johnson (keys) and Rob Harris (rhythm guitar).
