Celia was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She never had outstanding external data, but she still managed to win the respect of the public with her realistic, touching images of simple, primitive, down-to-earth southerners. She began her career as a replacement for Diana Ladd (who in turn once replaced the hugely popular Polly Holiday) on the CBS comedy series Alice; later, however, Celia evolved into a much more complex and multifaceted actor.
