Kiyoshi Kurosawa was born on July 19, 1955. He is not related to the famous Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. Studied cinematography at Rikkyo University. Kurosawa made his first full-length film in 1983, The Kandagawa Wars, and made his directing debut in the 1980s as a director of low-budget, video-only films, notably Yakuza films. In the early 1990s, Kurosawa won a scholarship to study at the Sundance Institute and was given the opportunity to study filmmaking in America, although he had been working professionally in film for ten years. Kurosawa first gained international prominence with the hypnotic serial killer movie Healing (Cure, 1997). In the same year, he experimented with two thrillers one after the other - Serpent's Path and Eyes of the Spider. Both used the same premise (a father takes revenge for the murder of his child) and the lead actor (Syo Aikawa), but completely different plots. Kurosawa went on to direct the semi-sequel to Healing, Charisma (1999), which crystallized his penchant for apocalyptic images and themes of self-seeking and isolation. In 2001, Kurosawa directed Kairo / Circuit / Pulse, a dark and gripping horror film about the ghosts that have invaded the living world via the Internet. Most recently, Kurosawa released the movie "Bright Future" (2003) starring Tadanobu Asano. This is his first film shot with a digital camera. Later, in the same year, another digital tape followed - "The Double" (Dopperugenga).
Kurosawa's directorial style has been compared to that of Stanley Kubrick and Andrei Tarkovsky, although he himself never named these directors among those who influenced him. In interviews, Kurosawa admitted to admiring American films of the early 1970s. Many of his films deal in one form or another with how society shapes individuals; about people obsessed with some kind of eccentric project, or about how social mechanisms disintegrate when faced with a completely irrational. Very often, as a film, where all these themes sound, they call "Healing", but they are present in other films as well. So, the first and second of them are combined in the plot of the film "Bright Future", which tells about a young man trying to teach a jellyfish to live in fresh water, which leads to unexpected results.
