She was born on September 3, 1988 in Tehran, in the family of Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Marzikh Meshkini (English), famous Iranian filmmakers. Hana has a sister, Samira, who is eight years her senior and is also a filmmaker.
Hana became acquainted with big cinema at the age of seven, when she performed a cameo role in her father's film A Moment of Innocence. The film received wide recognition and extremely positive reviews from film critics. Mohsen Makhmalbaf, seeing his daughter's abilities, tried in every possible way to develop and expand them. As Khan later said in an interview, her father gave her a love of cinema, but later their views diverged in many ways, since they are representatives of different generations.
Hana's two films, "The Joy of Madness" (documentary, 2003) and "The Buddha Collapsed with Shame" (2007), became laureates of prestigious international film awards.
