His father is actor Hans Diehl, mother is a costume designer, brother is a composer. While he was growing up, his family moved frequently, they lived in Hamburg, Vienna, Dusseldorf and Paris. At the age of 18, August played in the play The Robbers by Friedrich Schiller. Diehl is married to actress Julia Malik. On May 23, 2009, the couple had a daughter, Elsa Augusta. The actor knows how to play the guitar and also speaks Spanish, German, French and English.
