Tengiz Abuladze - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips.
Born January 31, 1924.
The directorial handwriting of Abuladze is characterized by a harmonious balance between the universal meaning expressed in cinematic images and a vivid national tradition rooted in the Georgian plastic arts. In 1943-1946 Abuladze studied at the Tbilisi Theater Institute named after Sh. Rustaveli (his teachers were G. A. Tovstonogov and D. Aleksidze), in 1953 he graduated from the directing department of VGIK (workshop of S. Yutkevich). At VGIK Abuladze also studied with S. M. Eisenstein, L. V. Kuleshov, A. S. Khokhlova, A. P. Dovzhenko. Since 1953 he has been a director of the Georgia-Film studio. Abuladze entered the fictional cinematography together with R. Chkheidzes film "Lurdja Magdana" based on the work of Yekaterina Gabashvili. This little film earned them the prestigious award - Grand Prix of the 1956 Cannes Film Festival in the short film competition. The directors combined poetry with soil realism. "Lurdja Magdana" drew a line under the old aesthetics, and became the ancestor of the new Georgian cinema, the source of the "Georgian school" .
Abuladze's next independent film “Other Children” (1958), filmed under the noticeable influence of Italian neorealism, was also marked with the symbol of the union of poetry and the ordinary, novelty of style. In the film "I, Grandma, Iliko and Illarion" (1963) by N. Dumbadze, Abuladze's tendency towards poetic and philosophical generalization was most fully manifested. Through the characteristic features of everyday life, the bright and juicy language of the heroes, soft humor, he deeply revealed the national character, the strength of the people, manifested during the war. The film "Plea" (1967, the main prize of the International Film Festival of Auteur Cinema in San Remo, 1973) is a complex film adaptation in which, in search of a cinematic equivalent, two poems ("Aluda Ketelauri" and "Guest and Host"), prosaic philosophical sketches and poems of the great Georgian poet Vazha Pshavela. The poet's destiny, the fight against evil for the sake of protecting good, overcoming the age-old enmity of two neighboring peoples, love and fidelity - these themes and images of Pshavela have been adequately reflected in this film. In the film "A Necklace for My Beloved" (1973) based on the story by A. Abu-Bakar, the director continued his search for new poetics, trying to combine the eccentricity of the Dagestani folk tale and a philosophical parable. In its perfect form, this poetics is embodied in the film. "The Tree of Desire" by G. Leonidze (1977), the second after "Prayer" film of the triptych, which ended with "Repentance" (1984). "The Tree of Desire" received the Italian prize "David" Donatello "," Golden Tour "for directing at the 1977 Tehran Film Festival, the main prize of the 1978 Karlovy Vary Film Festival. "Repentance" became the main film of the last period of the existence of the USSR. After the Fifth Congress of the Union of Cinematographers, he was released (the film was filmed in 1984, but was released in 1986). With striking expression and richness, the film showed the tragedy and roots of the bloody Soviet terror, its consequences and its end. This was the first anti-totalitarian film to shock the entire country. At the 1987 Cannes Film Festival, the film won four prizes: a special jury prize, a prize for the actor Avtandil Makharadze, a FIPRESCI prize and an ecumenical jury. The combination of an intellectual path with intuitive insights, visual culture with actor's discoveries that can only be captured by means of cinema is the basis of Abuladze's direction. He had a great influence on Georgian cinema, opening new horizons, but not causing imitation. Abuladze was one of the initiators of the creation of the film faculty at the Tbilisi Theater Institute, where he taught a course in film directing. Among his students are Temur Babluani, Nana Janelidze.
