American director, screenwriter and producer.
Born April 01, 1972 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Brother of director Albert Hughes, with whom he often collaborates. Allen's father is from Africa, and his mother Aida is an Armenian born in Iran. The parents divorced when the brothers were 2 years old. At the age of 9, they moved with their mother to Pomona, California, east of Los Angeles. Aida raised her children alone, but was able to devote time to herself and started her own business, opening a recruitment agency. The mother always supported her sons' aspirations to take up cinema, and when Allen was 12 years old, she gave him and his brother a video camera. Thus, the children spent all their free time making short films. After graduating from high school, Allen began working on musical films with actors such as Tone Locke and Tupac Shakur. The first film directed with his brother with a budget of only $ 3 million - "A Threat to Society" (1993) was presented at the Cannes Film Festival. The brothers were only 20 years old at the time. They acted not only as directors, but also screenwriters, assisting the main screenwriter Tiger Williams. The film was a success and was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award.
Their next film project was the film "Dead Presidents" (1995), which tells about the veterans of the Vietnam War. The film was presented at the New York Film Festival, but could not overtake its predecessor in gross and critically acclaimed. Following Dead Presidents was American Pimp (1999), a full-length documentary on the underground life of prostitutes and the exploitation of women. Premiered at the 1999 Sundance Film Festival.
The Hughes brothers' next project was to work as assistant directors on Out of Hell (2001), the film version of Alan Moore's novel about the Jack the Ripper murders in Victorian England.
After the ominous story of "From Hell," the Hughes brothers took up various projects.
In 2010, another Hughes brothers' film "The Book of Eli" was released on screens.
