German director, screenwriter, producer and cameraman.
Born August 14, 1945 in Dusseldorf, Germany. Full name - Wilhelm Ernst Wenders.
In 1949, the family moved to Koblenz and later to Oberhausen. After graduating from high school in 1963, Wenders studied medicine, psychology, philosophy and sociology for four semesters in Munich, Freiburg and Dusseldorf. In October 1966, he goes to Paris and prepares to enter the IDHEC film school, but does not qualify for the competition. Until September 1967 he worked in an engraving studio and regularly visits the French Cinematics, where he discovers the history of cinema - including the German one. After returning to Germany, he served for some time in the Dusseldorf branch of United Artists. In 1967 he entered the newly founded Higher School of Film and Television in Munich. During his studies in film school, many short films appear, which he, as a rule, finances himself. However, Wenders made his first film, Locations, back in 1966. The first full-length film "Summer in the City" (1970) was his thesis. While attending film school, Wenders writes short film reviews. In 1971, together with twelve other filmmakers, he co-founded Filmverlaq der Autoren for the production and distribution of new German films. The Goalkeeper's Fear of the Eleven-Meter (1972) based on the novel of the same name by Peter Handke is Wenders' first feature film after graduating from film school. The first official recognition was achieved thanks to "False Movement" according to the original script by Peter Handke: in 1975 the film received six federal film awards "Deutscher Filmpreis", including for directing. The next film "Over Time", which Wenders financed independently and directed without a script, was shown at the Cannes International Film Festival and was a great success in Germany. In 1976, Wenders shoots the German-French film American Friend, after watching it, director and producer Francis Ford Coppola offers Wenders to direct the film Hammett .
In the spring and summer of 1979, Wenders is filming Nick's Movie about director friend Nicholas Ray, who dies of cancer in June 1979. Filmed in the fall of 1983 in America, the German-French film Paris, Texas won the Palme d'Or at the 1984 Cannes Film Festival and enjoyed commercial success. In 1987, Wenders directed Heaven Over Berlin, his most popular film to win a Directing Award at the Cannes Film Festival, the 1st European Felix Prize, the German Federal Film Awards and the Los Angeles Film Critics' Awards.
Wenders is an honorary doctor of the Sorbonne (1989), a professor at the Berlin Academy of Film and Television, a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts (1984), President of the European Film Academy (1991), and holder of the Federal Order of Merit.
