Excel studied from 1995 to 1999 at the Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Academy of Music and Theater in Leipzig.
He also trained as a clown in London. He then played from 1999 to 2001 at the Augsburg Theater, among others, Romeo and Juliet (1999), Hostage by Brendan Bechen (2000) and as Che Guevara in the musical Evita (2001, directed by Joseph E. Kopplinger).
He also worked in film and television.
