Joe Simpson was born in 1960 in Malaysia. In 1968-1978 he studied at St. Martin's School in North Yorkshire, and then at Ampleforth College. Graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in English literature and philosophy in 1984.
In 1985, Joe Simpson and his friend Simon Yates attempted the first ascent of the western face of Siula Grande (6,344 m), the highest peak in the Peruvian Andes.
Upon returning to his homeland, over the next several years, he was practically bedridden, underwent a number of complex surgical operations, and began to write.
After an injury in 1985, according to doctors' forecasts, Joe not only could no longer play sports, but also walk in general. However, he was able to recover and return to mountaineering. In 1991, during the ascent to the top of Pachermo in Nepal, after a fall of more than 200 meters, he received a severe injury to his right leg and practically lost his nose (the events of this ascent formed the basis of This Game of Ghosts). During 2000-2003, Joe made six attempts to climb the Eiger North Face, but each time the weather forced him to retreat. During one of his ascents in 2000, two climbers were swept from the wall by an avalanche before his eyes. In 2009 Simpson took a new solo route on the southwest face of Mera Peak (6470 m) in Nepal, which he named "In Memoriam" in memory of the fallen comrades Male Duff (partner in the 1991 ascent) and Jan Tattersella.
