Born on July 15, 1930 in Kuibyshev.
In 1948-1950, he studied at the acting department of the theater school named after M.S. Shchepkina, the directing department of VGIK (1957, workshop of Lev Kuleshov).
Since 1957 - director of the Mosfilm film studio. Since 1976 - the artistic director of the studio of the musical film TO "Screen" of the Central Television.

As a director, he loudly declared himself with the film "Republic Shkid" (1966). His next picture "Intervention" with the participation of V.S. Vysotsky was filmed in 1967 for the 50th anniversary of the October Revolution, but was “put on the shelf” and released in 1987. In The Return of the Battleship (1996), the director tried to recreate the carnival side of the revolutionary element, but the immediate sixties ardor disappeared, the theme and has completely ceased to interest the audience.
