Born on June 5, 1934 in Samarkand.
Studied at the Faculty of Philology of the Central Asian University in Tashkent (1952-1953). Graduated from the directing department of VGIK (1959, workshop of S.A. Gerasimov).
He shot several documentaries at the Uzbekfilm film studio (The Hungry Steppe - 1957, The Zakirovs Sing - 1963 and others).
Since 1960 he has been a director of the Lenfilm film studio.
He taught at the St. Petersburg University of Film and Television. Professor at the Department of Directing.
He passed away on October 10, 2009 in St. Petersburg.
