He spent his childhood in Samarkand with his grandparents. Then he lived with his parents in Samara, on the Volga. He began to study at school in Moscow on Malaya Bronnaya. Since 1958 he has been director of the Lenfilm film studio. Since 1967 he has been a production director at the Mosfilm film studio. He was the author of scripts for some of his films, some together with N. Kurikhin.
The author of the books "There, in the War", "Benapi", "My Unshot Movie" and "An Ordinary Biography" (a novel for one reader), staged a play "Only Telegrams" at the Taganka Theater.
