Soviet director, screenwriter.
He studied at the comic opera studio in Petrograd, and in 1919 he organized a theater studio in Odessa. Two years later, he returned to the city on the Neva and, together with Grigory Kozintsev, organized the Factory of the Eccentric Actor (FEKS).
In 1924, together with Kozintsev, he came to the cinema: they shot the film "The Adventure of Oktyabrina" with the participation of FEKS actors.
Since 1924 - director of the Lenfilm film studio.
Teacher of the Military Revolutionary Committee at the Lenfilm cinema (1962-1968).
Since 1943 - worked at the Mosfilm cinema .
Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1967).
People's Artist of the RSFSR (1987) .
Buried at the Kuntsevo cemetery in Moscow.
