Nikolai Shevkunenko was born on October 7, 1930 in the town of Bryansk. Nikolai's fate turned out to be difficult. In 1941, the boy turned 11 years old, the Nazis locked him up in the Zhizdrinsky prison. A little later he was transferred to a concentration camp. Nikolai was still lucky to get rid of the fate of a prisoner, when in 1942, on his way to Poland, he was rescued by partisans along with other prisoners.
Immediately after the liberation of Bryansk, young Nikolai went to study at a vocational school. In 1945 he worked in a factory. Already in those years, Nikolai had the makings of an actor. On examination of amateur performances, he was noticed and sent to study at the Bryansk Theater School. He graduated from it in 1947. And in 1950, the aspiring actor entered the Moscow Art Theater School. Having successfully completed it in 1953, Nikolai began working in theaters in cities such as Bryansk and Penza.
