Atom Egoyan (July 19, 1960, Cairo) - Canadian director, screenwriter, producer, actor, editor of Armenian origin. The main themes in his work are the themes of human alienation and isolation, which are revealed through the images of people related to the development of technology, to the bureaucracy or other power structures.
Egoyan was born in Cairo. His parents named him the Atom after a nuclear power plant built in Egypt in 1960. Egoyan and his sister Eva (now a concert pianist from Toronto) were sent by their parents to Victoria, British Columbia. As a teenager, he became interested in reading and writing his own plays. The works of Samuel Beckett and Harold Pinter had a significant influence on Egoyan. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in International Relations and Classical Guitar.
In 2002, Egoyan's film "Ararat" about the Armenian Genocide was released, which was disapproved by Turkey, which tried to prevent its screening at the Cannes Film Festival.
Egoyan now lives in Toronto with his wife Arsine Khanjyan, an actress who has starred in many of Egoyan's films, and his son Arshil.
