Born June 16, 1934, London, England, UK - English actress and screenwriter, Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.

Graduated from Guildhall School of Music and Theater. She then began her career at the Royal Shakespeare Theater. Since then, Atkins has played many roles on stage on both sides of the ocean, in particular often portraying the image of Virginia Woolf. On television, Atkins made history as the creator of one of the most successful British dramas, Up and Down the Stairs, which aired from 1971 to 1975.

Atkins has won two Drama Desk Awards: 1978 and 1991, an Emmy, BAFTA, and a 2008 Golden Globe nomination for her role in the miniseries Cranford. In addition, her role in the 1983 film The Dresser earned her a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress. On June 16, 2001, she became a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
