Minghella was born in London on September 16, 1985. His father was of Italian descent and his mother, originally from Hong Kong, is of Chinese and Scottish descent. Minghella was educated at two independent schools: St. Anthony's Preparatory School and University College Hampstead School. He then entered Columbia University, which he considered his "top priority". Typically, he only worked on films during the summer vacation. Minghella said that he felt that the "English boy in the American school" was withdrawn into himself, and that most of the students at Columbia University did not know that he was an actor.
