Born in Queens, New York, USA.
Son of Shirley and Arthur Canton who has worked in the film industry in marketing and advertising.
He graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles, after which he began working at 20th Century Fox. From 1980 he was executive vice president of Warner Bros., and from 1991 - "Worldwide Motion Picture Production unit". Was Chairman of Sony's Columbia Pictures.
