Duren was the son of a working-class family in Berlin and after World War II got the opportunity to study at the German Theater School in 1945-1947. He studied at the drama school "Circle" (Fritz-Kirchhoff-school). This was followed by commitments to Potsdam and then to Ludwigslust, Wismar and Schwerin. In the early 1950s he joined the Berlin Ensemble from Bertolt Brecht in East Berlin. From 1958 to 1988 he worked at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin.
Since the mid-1950s, Duren has appeared in films as an actor.
Fred Duren lived from 1988 until his death in Israel, where he served and worked. The funeral was on March 3, 2015 at the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.
He was married from 1949 to 1954 to actress Irmgard.
