Descended from an impoverished gentry. The writer's father came from the Tatars who settled on the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania during the reign of Vitovt, the so-called. "Sticky". Only in the 18th century did they convert from Islam to Catholicism. Mother was from a Belarusian gentry family.

He graduated from high school in Warsaw and in 1866-1870 studied at the Faculty of Medicine and History and Philology at the Main School (since 1869 - Warsaw University). In print he made his student debut in the journal "Weekly Review" ("Przeglad Tygodniowy", 1869). Since 1873 he has been a regular feuilletonist at Gazeta Polska. From 1874 he was in charge of the literary department of the weekly "Niwa", from 1882 - editor of the conservative newspaper "Slovo" ("Slowo").

In 1888, an anonymous admirer provided him with 15 thousand rubles, with which Senkevich created a foundation that paid scholarships to cultural workers suffering from tuberculosis.

Visiting the USA (1876-1879), he published Letters from a Journey (1876-1878). Upon his return to Europe, he lived for some time in Paris, in 1879 he was in Lvov, then he visited Venice and Rome. Since then he traveled a lot, changing his place of residence many times.

In 1900, in connection with the 25th anniversary of his literary activity, Sienkiewicz was presented with the Oblegorek estate in the Stravczyn commune in Kielec powiat, acquired with funds raised by the public (now - the writer's museum).

With the outbreak of the First World War, he left for Switzerland. He headed the Committee for Assistance to the Victims of the War in Poland. After his death in Vevey (Switzerland), the ashes were originally buried in a local Catholic church, in 1924 they were transferred to Warsaw and buried in the crypt of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

The early writings of the writer characterize him as a positivist, but, unlike other Polish positivists, he was also a conservative.

Henrik Sienkiewicz is a 1905 Nobel laureate in literature.

Was a corresponding member (from December 1896) and an honorary academician (from November 1914) of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences in the department of Russian language and literature.

Henryk Sienkiewicz was the most published author of fiction in Poland in 1944-2004: during this period, 868 editions of his works with a total circulation of 35.851 million copies were published.

The Il-62 aircraft with tail number RA-86708 was also named in his honor.
