Was born on July 5, 1895 in Riga, Latvia. Studied at Petrograd University. Since 1916 - artist of the Latvian Petrograd New Theater, then - front-line theaters. In 1919-1971 he was an actor at the Riga Workers' Theater of Soviet Latvia (later - the Academic Drama Theater of the Latvian SSR). In cinema since 1947 (played mainly negative roles) .
Honored Artist of the Latvian SSR (1945). People's Artist of the Latvian SSR (1947). People's Artist of the USSR (1956) .
He passed away on November 3, 1973 in Riga.
