Born June 12, 1947 in Dnepropetrovsk. People's Artist of the Russian Federation (2007). By first education, he is a musician. Graduated from the Kazan State Conservatory in 1970, majoring in violin, after which he studied at the Faculty of Music Directing of the Leningrad State Conservatory (1973-76). At the age of 26 he received a PhD in art history. Taught history of performing arts at the Kazakh and Leningrad Conservatories, worked as an editor at the Leningrad Academic Maly Opera House.
