Studied Hebrew as a child.

Studied at FZU Electrozavod. In 1941 he graduated from the studio of the Theater of Working Youth at the plant (TRaM electricians), directed by Valentin Pluchek; in 1939, together with Zinovy ??Gerdt, a comrade in FZU and TRAM, he became an actor in the so-called "Arbuzov studio" under the leadership of Alexei Arbuzov and Pluchek. The first play "Duel" was written in collaboration with the studio students Alexander Galich (then Ginzburg) and Vsevolod Bagritsky. The play was rehearsed in the studio until the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.

Like many students, Isai Kuznetsov went to the front, fought on the Leningrad Front, then on the First Ukrainian Front as part of the 11th Pontoon Bridge Brigade, reached Dresden. He was demobilized in 1945 as a senior sergeant. His two brothers and his wife were killed at the front. Member of the CPSU (b) since 1944.

After the end of the war, Kuznetsov was invited by Valentin Pluchek as an assistant director to the Moscow touring theater, which he directed at that time. In 1949, during the so-called “fight against cosmopolitanism,” Kuznetsov was fired from the theater, and a little later, Pluchek was fired as well.

Author of scripts for TV programs, plays, many co-authored with A. G. Zak. The Sovremennik Theater began with their play "Two Colors".

Author of scripts for such popular films at the time as "Property of the Republic", "Moscow-Cassiopeia", "The Lost Expedition" and "Golden River".

From 1976 to 2000, together with Kira Paramonova, he directed the script workshop of VGIK.

In 2015, his autobiographical book "Once Upon a Time in War" was published, which tells how in 1941 he went to the front and served as a sergeant in pontoon units, with which he reached Dresden. These stories are not about battles and battles, they are about people in war. The collection also includes his memoirs "Before and After" - about pre-war and post-war youth, about friends - Zinovia Gerdt, Alexander Galich, Boris Slutsky, Mikhail Lvovsky, Vsevolod Bagritsky, David Samoilov.
