Born 1958 - Chinese film director, actor and screenwriter.
He worked as an artist in the art ensemble of the Beijing garrison of the People's Liberation Army of China. In 1977 he tried to enter the Central Theater Institute and the Beijing Institute of Cinematography, but failed in the exams. Becoming in 1985, he worked as an artist at the Beijing Television Art Center, where he also began writing screenplays. During this period, he met the writer Wang Shuo, with whom they co-wrote the script for the comedy series "Editorial". He gained fame after the comedy based on the novel by Wang Shuo, "The Factory of Dreams" (1997), which became successful at the box office in China. Xiaogang continued to work in the comedy genre, then directed the films "Don't Leave Until We See You," Happy Funeral, "which was also a success in China. In July 2004, the American magazine BusinessWeek included the director in the annual Stars of Asia rating, which includes 25 prominent personalities from Asian countries. As noted in the magazine, Xiaogang is "arguably the most successful filmmaker in mainland China." His most recent directorial work is The Signal to Retreat (2007), which is about the events of the Chinese Civil War.
