Born on July 13, 1932 in Moscow.
In 1961 he graduated from the Music College named after. Ippolitov-Ivanov and the directing department of the Lunacharsky State Institute of Theater Arts. Studied at the acting department of the Moscow Art Theater School and at the Faculty of Russian Language and Literature of the Moscow Pedagogical Institute.
In the 60s he staged at the Theater. Mayakovsky play "Death of Tarelkin", at the Central Children's Theater (now RAMT) - play "King Matt the First" based on the tale of Janusz Korczak. Later, in the theater studio of Moscow State University, he staged performances - "Svetlov" (from the poet's letters and diaries) and "On Drunkenness in Russia".
In 1972-1982 - director, chief director of the Leningrad Comedy Theater. In 1982-1989 he worked at the Moscow Theater. Mayakovsky. Since 1989 - at the Vakhtangov Theater; staged performances at the "Satyricon" theater. 1993-2012 - artistic director of the Moscow theater "Pyotr Fomenko Workshop" .
In 1981-2003 he taught at the Russian Academy of Theater Arts (formerly GITIS). Staged performances in Poland, Austria, France.
Honored Artist of the RSFSR. People's Artist of Russia.
Passed away on August 9, 2012.
