Born May 30, 1896 in Goshen (Indiana) in the family of a paper manufacturer Frank Hawkes and his wife Helene. In 1906-1908 he studied in high school, in 1908-1913 at the University of Pasadena (California), in 1914 at Phillips Exeter Academy (Massachusetts), in 1915-1917 at Cornell University (New York). Receives an engineering degree. In 1917-1919 he served in the US Army Aviation Service; is taking military training in Texas; receives the rank of lieutenant. In 1920-1925, a race car driver, designer at an aircraft plant. In 1919-1921 he was an independent producer of two-part films by Alan Duane, Marshall Neilan, Allen Holubar. He is also an aviator, race car driver, yachtsman, horse breeder, mountain skier, fisherman, hunter, carpenter, collector of antique weapons, architect, collector of Occidental painting and engraving, jeweler, designer of racing cars and aircraft (in 1936, a car designed by Hawkes won the Indianapolis) .
In 1975 he received an honorary Oscar for his contribution to the art of cinema. Howard Hawks died on December 26, 1977 at his Palm Springs home.
