Born on January 6 (19), 1908 in St. Petersburg in a family of writers - publisher S. Yu. Kopelman and writer V. Ye. Beklemisheva (took his mother's surname). Graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University (1930). He worked on the construction of a radio station, conducted tests at the shipyards of the Caspian Sea. Since 1935 - in scientific work.
He appeared in print under the pseudonym Yuri Krymov. He became widely known for the story "Tanker Derbent" (1938), published with the help of Yuri Libedinsky; in 1941 a film of the same name was made on it.
He went to the front as a volunteer on June 26, 1941. An employee of the newspaper of the 26th Army "Soviet Patriot", wrote military essays, articles. Military rank - quartermaster 2nd rank.
On September 19, 1941 he was admitted to the CPSU (b). Killed in battle on the night of September 20, while encircling the army in the Kiev cauldron. His last letter to his wife Anna, written shortly before the last battle, has been preserved.
He was buried near the village of Bogodukhovka, now the Chernobaevsky district of the Cherkasy region of Ukraine.
