Soviet and Russian actor and director Rolan Bykov (according to his passport, Roland Anatolyevich Bykov) was born in Kiev in October 1929. His father was a red commander.

During his school years, a love for the theater awoke in Roland, and the young man began to hone his acting skills in the House of Pioneers. When the time came, Bykov chose a theater institute. Interestingly, the guy was refused to accept at the Moscow Art Theater, and at GITIS, and at VGIK. The reasons for the refusals were Roland's low stature and extraordinary appearance. However, despite these details, he was enrolled in the Shchukin Theater School. As a result, Bykov got on the course of Lvova and Shikhmatov.

After graduating from college, the aspiring actor got a job at the Moscow Theater for Young Spectators. Here Bykov worked for seven seasons, and from the mid-fifties began to simultaneously act in films. The School of Courage is the first film with Roland Bykov, it was released in 1954. Later, the actor became an employee of the student theater of Moscow State University, where he began to stage performances. Roland's next place of work was the Baltic House theater, in which he was the leading director.

At the beginning of his film career, Bykov was not given important roles. However, he quickly gained the credibility of filmmakers with his talented portrayal of minor characters. One of the most striking images embodied by Roland on the screen was Akaki Bashmachkin from the drama Overcoat.

In the sixties, Bykov took the position of the director of the Mosfilm film studio. Here he began work on his own films, eventually becoming the most famous author of children's cinema. Under his leadership, films such as Aibolit-66, Seven Nurses, Attention, Turtle !, Telegram, etc. were shot. Roland often starred in his own works, but also accepted invitations from other directors.

In old age Bykov fell ill with lung cancer. Despite his illness, he worked diligently: he shot pictures, taught, appeared in films and television programs. In 1998, the actor died. Films with Rolan Bykov are available on our website.
