Lydia Smirnova was born in 1915 in Tobolsk. The girl's mother was a teacher, her father was a tsarist officer. Lost both parents as a child. The father disappeared during the hostilities, then Lydia's younger brother died. The mother was never able to recover from the loss. She was placed in a psychiatric hospital, where she died. The orphaned Smirnova was taken up by her father's brother.

During her years of study in theater, the actress was often invited to auditions, but rarely approved. In 1938, Lydia played a tiny role in the film New Moscow. Since 1940, her career as a film actress began to take shape. Smirnova played the main role in the comedy My Love, after which she became very popular. Since 1945, Lydia has played on the stage of the Film Actor's Studio Theater. She was a member of the CPSU since 1952. For her acting career, she was awarded many awards, including the 3rd degree Stalin Prize and the title of People's Artist.

Smirnova died in 2007. She was buried at the capital's Vvedensky cemetery.
