Alexander Rowe - biography, date of birth, place of birth, filmography, clips.
March 8, 1906, Moscow - December 28, 1973, Moscow.
Soviet film director, screenwriter. People's Artist of the RSFSR (1968) .
Graduated from the acting department of the Boris Tchaikovsky Film School (1930), studied at the Moscow Drama College named after M.N. Ermolova (1931-1934) .
At the age of 10 he was left without a father. To support his family he became an assistant priest. From 1921 he worked at the Blue Blouse propaganda theater. He was an assistant director for Yakov Protazanov and other directors. Since 1937 - director of the Soyuzdetfilm film studio (then - the Gorky film studio). One of the few Russian directors who have devoted their creative life to creating fairy-tale films. In 1993, the Alexander Row Children's Film Foundation (Moscow) was organized. Alexander Rowe is rightly called the country's first film storyteller (only the name of Alexander Ptushko can be put next to it). The release on screens in 1938 of Rowe's first work "By the Pike" was greeted with caution - isn't this mysticism? what are the hints? But the self-propelled stove, the geese moving backwards, the talking pike liked not only children, but also adults so much that the director was ordered a new fairy tale: about the struggle between good and evil, self-denial and native land. Rowe directed Vasilisa the Beautiful, where Sergei Stolyarov first appeared as the Russian fairytale hero, and Georgy Millyar as Baba Yaga. Their duet was continued in Kashchee the Immortal, where the image of the enemy was associated with fascism, and his drawing approached the figures of the early Gothic. From film to film, the technical side of working on fairy tales improved, the number of special effects increased, and great attention was paid to make-up and decorations. Because of this, Rowe was often offended by the actors, to whom he very dryly explained the problem: “We are filming the scene of the abduction of the baby” - that's all. And to their bewildered exclamations he answered: "You all should know better than me, you got an acting education." But he had his own constant cast of actors, among whom he tried to distribute the main characters. And Millyar sometimes played three roles in one film. Rowe filmed mainly Russian folklore, folk tales, their literary adaptations, tried to convey not only the content and "good fellows a lesson", but also the soul of the tale, the spirit and moral traditions of his native country. His paintings are imbued with poetry, optimism, humor, mischief, they have a lot of music and unusual characters. Sometimes modern words, sayings, everyday details slip into them, as if teasing and poking fun at the viewer, involving him in a cheerful fairy-tale extravaganza. The best film by Alexander Rowe "Frost" clearly demonstrates all of the above.
He conquered audiences from many countries and won several prestigious prizes. With each new tale, Rowe traveled to Moscow cinemas, schools and pioneer camps, where he enthusiastically talked about the possibilities of cinema, about his favorite actors and love for his native land. The great director was buried in Moscow at the Babushkinskoye cemetery (section 16, row 1, left side of the central alley of the cemetery).
