Born on May 31, 1936 in Mariupol. In 1960 he graduated from the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute, in 1969 - the directing department of VGIK (workshop of Vladimir Belokurov and Grigory Chukhrai). Before studying at VGIK, he worked as an engineer, then at the Telefilm studio (Leningrad), the Mosfilm film studio, Belarusfilm film studio, the N. Gorky.
