Born on August 12 (July 31, old style), 1899 in the provincial town of Livny, Russian Empire, into an acting family. First he entered a real school in his city, then, after the family moved to the city of Grozny, he graduated from there. In 1920 he began to study at the art workshop in Baku, under the direction of director Arzamasov. Sergey Romodanov managed to work in various theaters in the city of Khiva, Tashkent, Blagoveshchensk, Izhevsk, Yaroslavl.

In 1941 he made his screen debut in the film based on the novel by Maxim Gorky, The Artamonovs Case, where he played the head of the family, the manufacturer Ilya Artamonov, who was from former serfs. The next film with Sergei Romodanov in the title role came out already in 1954 - a film about people and their difficult fates, loyalty and betrayal, love and parting. The following year, he played Brigadier Shugailo in a social drama about the development of virgin lands First Echelon. In the film adaptation of Oles Honchar's story - the film Girl from the Lighthouse, he played the keeper of this lighthouse and the father of this very girl. Then there was the role of Berya in the comedy melodrama Height. And another vivid image of the actor - Captain Gop in Scarlet Sails, released in 1961. In the same year, he played the horse breeder Aristarkh Sergeevich Burmin in the film Lyubushka.

Almost all the roles of Sergei Romodanov, played by him in films, are united by a strong character and masculinity. His characters are often characterized by strength of character, breadth and scope of nature. The last image of Sergei Dmitrievich in cinema was in 1964, when he appears as an old man with a newspaper in the Tale of Lost Time. In the fall of 1975, Sergei Romodanov passed away. He died in Yaroslavl at the age of 76.
