Leonid Filatov was born on December 24, 1946 in Kazan, in the family of a geologist (according to other sources, a radio operator). In the early 50s, the Filatov family moved to Ashgabat, where Leonid lived until graduation. The school years include the first classes in the drama club and the first literary experience (the first publication was a fable in the newspaper "Komsomolets Turkmenistan").
In 1965, Filatov came to Moscow to enroll in VGIK, but he did not have the required work experience and directorial development, and, on the advice of a classmate, decided to take exams at the acting department of the Theater School. B.V.Shchukin. In 1969 he graduated from the Theater School (workshop of V. Lvova) and was accepted as an actor in the Moscow Theater of Drama and Comedy on Taganka, where he worked until 1985: when A. Efros, Leonid Filatov was appointed the main director of the theater, as a sign of solidarity with Yu. Lyubimov, went to the Sovremennik Theater. At the Taganka Theater he worked simultaneously with Vladimir Vysotsky. In 1987 he returned to the Taganka Theater, and after the division of the troupe (1993), together with Nikolai Gubenko, Natalia Sayko, Nina Shatskaya and other actors, he created his own creative association "The Commonwealth of Taganka Actors".
Together with other Taganka actors, he co-authored the play Under the Skin of the Statue of Liberty. The author of the plays "The Motley People", "The Cuckoo Clock", "The Artist from Sherwood Forest". She is the author of songs for the plays "Theater of Clara Gazul", "Martin Eden", "Once upon a time in California", "Hercules and the Augean Stables".
